Gaming machines in Australia
What the national standard sets, state by state
Australia’s gaming machine standard lists each state’s and territory’s limits in one table: maximum bet, minimum return to player, when a note acceptor shuts off. This atlas shows that table on a map, with notes from a state’s own documents where we quote them.
- Maximum bet $5 in the jurisdiction’s first column of the table (clubs & hotels, or its only column)
- Maximum bet $10 in its only column (NSW, ACT)
- WA: the table has a casino column only; bets on the main gaming floor may not exceed $10 in aggregate
Shapes are schematic. Values are those printed in the national standard’s table; a jurisdiction’s own rules can differ (see each page).
Before you read the numbers
The standard is a technical document for machine makers and regulators. Jurisdictions adopt it through their own documents, and a state’s own Act, regulations or appendix can set a different value. Victoria is an example: the table lists a $1,000 note acceptor cut-off for clubs and hotels, while the Victorian Appendix stops cash input once credits reach $100. Where we quote such a document, the state’s page says so.
Reading the numbers explains what a minimum return to player does and does not tell you.
